Boat Work

Reset, Reassess, Recommit

Hard to believe that it has been since November of 2018 that we checked in and wrote on our blog. I have never really kept a diary or any type of travel journal in the past making the blog something that does not cross my mind unless it pops up on my Todoist app or Justin mentions it. And to be honest, I haven’t really felt like writing a blog. I was in a rut with the boat engine out of commission and after loosing our Second Mate, Pete (the dog). I had lost all of my focus and motivation and was searching for a new daily routine. We were also stuck at the boat dock with the mechanics pushing back engine repair dates into infinity. We were, and still are, putting money into the boat to get her ready to take off and yet we were not able to sail her. So yeah, I, at least, was in a rut.

To reach port we must sail – Sail, not tie at anchor, Sail, not drift

Things finally started to come together in February with the installation of our new header tank for our engine. She fired right up and sounded wonderful! With the engine failure fresh on our mind, we were so nervous taking her out for that first time after the repair. The moment that we were able to put the sails up and turn off the engine was glorious. Feeling the wind in the sails gives me the same feeling as the wind on your face when standing on the top of a mountain. Though turning the engine back on to getting all the way back to the dock was just as miraculous.

Since that tentative first sail back, we’ve gone out in the Bay as much as we dare. We’ve taken friends and family sailing for their first time. We even got my mom and Jack and his daughter/son-in-law on the boat which made us both super nervous for multiple reasons. We’ve also been working on the electrical system since we have had some wiring issues and were in need of a power inverter. We have learned to acknowledge that things involving the boat take a heck of a lot more time, and money, to accomplish. With lots of big and small projects going on, we are definitely moving forward once again and are even more motivated to continue our adventure.

Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the things you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail Away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover
