Its like sailing, but different
I discovered aviation at a very young age. I remember pouring over aviation book and reading about pretty much every aircraft that existed. By (insert arbitrary young age here) I could identify nearly any airplane that I saw. I was certain that I was going to be a pilot when I grew up. Well, that didn’t happen, but my fascination with aviation has remained and continued to grow.
We have been going to the Wings over Houston airshow for the last 2 years. This year that looked in doubt due to COVID, but somehow they managed to pull it off. They turned it into a drive in! Come in, park your car, and have the space around your car to setup chairs and watch the show. Unfortunalty that meant that all the cool static displays were gone, but in the end we got a lot more flying displays. Thanks to all the effort of the Wings over Houston Team, they were able to pull off a great show. They claim its the first major airshow in the country, also definitely the first major public event in Texas.
I wasn’t sure how good it was going to be at first, but as soon as we park, and I start hearing the engines start up, and planes taxi by, I was a kid again. Giddy and excited and identifying everything I could. They had nearly every available military demo team (they claim another first) The A-10, the F-35, the F-16, the F-22 and the C-17. I have a special place in my heart for the C-17, When I was 13, my grandpa took me to the Oshkosh airshow. That was I think the first year the C-17 was giving a demo as it wasn’t even in real service yet and I remember just being blown away by this big cargo jet doing maneuvers many aircraft that are much smaller cant.
A full day in the sun watching aircraft was an escape that I needed, but were going back to boat work now. We have some final upgrades to do before we start setting sail.
