Staring at the Great Divide

Stood alone on a mountain top, starin' out at the Great Divide.
I could go east, I could go west,
It is all up to me to decide

Since our last post at the end of December, we rang in the new year with cautious optimism and were continuing to make plans for our stay in Park City. Then we lost Justin’s dad, Bruce on January 17th. He had fought the final stages of liver failure since November and his body was not able to recover. Luckily, he was steadfast in pushing us to make sure that all of his affairs were in order prior to his passing. We always said that Bruce ran Park City but he was finally planning on retiring after 40+ years with the city. He was still unsure about his retirement plans, which included selling the house and moving to some small town and maybe buying a local bar or raising alpacas. His main goal though, as always, was to make sure that his boys were taken care of. He told me multiple times that if ever we needed something and couldn’t see how to make it happen by ourselves, we could always call on him.

As much as he wanted to be our safety net, Bruce was also always down to the idea of an adventure. He would join us for camping trips, home repairs and sailing weekends. He was never one to just sit and visit, he preferred a task to complete or going to a destination. Justin and I have definitely kept this in mind as we are making our plans moving foreword. First on the agenda, once things are completed here in Park City, is an epic road trip to multiple notable locations and to see numerous unforgettable people along the way.

While we finish up our time in Park City, we are going through/cleaning out generations of photos, Park City and Olympics memorabilia, as well as tons of power tools and ski gear. We’re enjoying riding the bus to the historic Main Street for dinners and hot toddies and going for runs with the beautiful Wasatch Mountains and ski areas as our backdrop. We will take our experiences and the people of this magical place with us, always.

As we look toward being back on the boat, we are working to honor Bruce’s memory. With a new sense of purpose and determination, we’ll jump back into the swing of boat maintenance and upgrades to prepare Nymeria for new horizons. We are putting together a plan to have blue water under Nymeria’s keel and to loose site of land for a while. We will live like there is a safety net, relish in completing projects together and to always go on grand adventures with wonderful people.

Across the Great Divide - Kate Wolf
I've been walking in my sleep
Counting troubles, 'stead of counting sheep.
Where the years went, I can't say;
I just turned around and they've gone away.

I've been sifting through the layers
Of dust books and faded papers.
They tell a story I used to know;
One that happened so long ago.

The finest hour, that I have seen,
Is the one that comes in between
The edge of night and the break of day,
When the darkness rolls away.

He's gone away - in yesterday,
I find myself on the mountainside,
Where the rivers change direction
Across the Great Divide.
